MARG HELGENBERGER: “I’m much more zen than at the start.”

Marg talks to us about the renewal of CSI and of the secret of her long career on the show.
Encounter with an actress who is still as attractive.

How do you manage to play the sex symbol of CSI in the midst of bloody investigations?
I work in a man’s world where I have to stay competent, intelligent and attractive. It is crucial for me to preserve my femininity.

Since the start of the show 9 years ago, have you changed?
I am more relaxed, much more zen than at the start. I’ve matured and I’ve set my priorities, my role as a mother, for example.

You’ve just celebrated your 50th birthday; in what frame of mind are you?
I’ve the impression that I’ve got more years behind me than in front. When I began on CSI, my son was 9, today he is 18. That alone makes me realize how time has flown…

Your son Hugh has left home?
Yes, and it was more difficult than I thought. I miss him and I find he doesn’t call often enough…

On the show too, you have had to deal with someone’s departure: that of William Petersen (Grissom)…
When I think back, I’m still affected by it. We had been working together for 8 years. That day, I lost a real partner. When he hugged me in the last scene, he made me promise to go see him in his play that is on now in Chicago, his hometown. And I am of course going to keep my promise.

It’s a permanent separation?
No, I know already that he will be back for the 200th episode. And I also have the feeling that I will be working with him again in one way or another. We are truly friends in real life, we share the same convictions and opinions…

And how has your working relationship been with Laurence Fishburne (Editor’s note: Petersen’s replacement whom we will discover in France in 2009)?
He’s an outstanding actor. I’ve a lot of pleasure playing opposite him and sharing scenes with him… And, be sure of this: I will be investing all my energy into this show for the next 10 years to come! (smile)
